Many species and varieties of this fragrant, Mediterranean herb have been cultivated in gardens for centuries.  In 1633 the English herbalist John Gerard described an "elegant variety" of sage with reddish leaves striped with white, green, and red, which he called "variegated, or painted sage."  Fearing Burr’s Field and Garden Vegetables of America (1865) included variegated green and red sage.  In addition to its culinary properties, sage was thought to prolong life.  This particular variety is useful also as an ornamental dwarf shrub in the garden. zone7,zone8,zone9
