Description: Hardy herbaceous North American perennial - Yellow ray florets are sometimes tinged red at the base; and reddish-orange central disk florets. Blooms summer through autumn
Habit: Grows 2 to 3 feet high and wide. Erect but spreading habit
Culture: Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil

This showy species is a common perennial found in open, sunny habitats on prairies and hillsides from Western British Columbia to Western Arizona and New Mexico. It was noted as one of the plants seen during the Lewis and Clark Expedition as they crossed the Continental Divide on July 6th, 1806. Philadelphia botanist Frederick Pursh, who first published descriptions of new species from the collection in 1813, noted it was found "on dry hills on the Rocky-mountains."
