Description

Hardy, deciduous, slow-spreading fern
Description:  Showy fronds are copper-red and often tinged pink or bronze when young, turning slightly shiny and dark green as they mature; new growth continues to emerge in flushes through the season; the developing sori (spores) are frequently bright red
Habit:  Grows up to 2.5 feet high and wide
Culture:  Prefers moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade and a sheltered site
Hardiness:  Cold hardy to USDA Zone 5
Origin:  Eastern Asia
Attributes:  Evergreen, Rabbit tolerant

This genus, formerly known as Nephrodium (from nephros, a kidney, the shape of the spore cases), contains over 200 species world-wide and the hardy sorts are popular as specimens for perennial borders.  The Autumn Fern, also known as Japanese Shield Fern, was introduced in the mid 19th-century.  This species is very common in Central and Southern Japan and in Northeast Asia from China to the Philippines and Taiwan.  It is best suited for shady gardens. zone5,zone6,zone7,zone8,zone9
