Description

The wild annual Sweet Pea, Lathyrus odoratus, was treasured in European and American gardens for its fragrance and vining habit since its introduction from Sicily in 1699. Two-hundred years later Sweet Peas were all the rage in “old fashioned” Colonial Revival gardens and many varieties were developed both in the U.S. and Britain. A striking red and white striped variety named ‘America’ was introduced by J. C. Vaughan and C. C. Morse & Co. in 1896.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost at 65˚. Before sowing, scarify and pre-soak seeds for 24 hours. Transplant to individual pots, then harden off and plant outdoors after the last frost. Provide a support structure. Approximately 15-20 seeds per packet.
