A unique colonial piece found in taverns and inns. The clay pipes were stored in the upper box and tobacco and flint in the drawer if one was provided. Often a box of tobacco was available at the bar. The clay pipes were community pipes and a traveler could pay the innkeeper a penny and have a smoke, when the clay pipe became full of tar, it could be placed in the fire which would burn the residue and clean the pipe, and by morning it was cool again and returned to the pipe box. This pipe box is hand-made in Virginia by Charles Neil out of Ambrosia Maple. 5 3/16”w x 15 1/4”h x 4 1/8”d.
