Thomas Jefferson deemed coffee “…the favorite drink of the civilized world.” Jefferson enjoyed the coffee houses of Williamsburg and Paris, and served coffee at the President’s House, Poplar Forest, and Monticello. He estimated that a pound of coffee a day was consumed at Monticello during his retirement.

Coffee imported from the East and West Indies was Jefferson’s preferred variety. The cellar was stocked with unroasted beans, and small quantities of coffee were roasted and ground in the Monticello kitchen. Coffee was prepared according to the recipe of Adrien Petit, Jefferson’s French maître d’hotel served at breakfast, and likely after dinner.

Combining the full body of Java beans with the boldness of the French Roast, Shenandoah Joe brings to you a blend inspired by Jefferson’s tastes.
Roasted in small batches, 1/2 pound of freshly ground coffee.
