The large-flowered clematis cultivars were highly esteemed ornamentals by the early nineteenth century, and acclaimed in Robert Buist’s 1839 book, American Flower Garden Directory. New Jersey nurseryman Peter Henderson wrote in 1890: “For the many large-flowering varieties we are indebted to [Philipp von] Siebold and [Robert] Fortune, who discovered them in Japan” during the mid 1800s. Clematis’ are heavy feeders, and it is recommended to mulch the base of the vine in late winter with well-rotted manure, avoiding the crown. ‘Gipsy Queen’ Clematis was first introduced in England in 1877. Deer generally do not like Clematis. zone4,zone5,zone6,zone7,zone8,zone9
