Native to central Europe and Turkey, Aurinia saxatilis has long been grown in rock gardens and atop rock walls. Its low, spreading habit also makes it a popular edging plant. Previously known as Alyssum saxatile, Basket of Gold was first offered in America by Philadelphia seed company Goldthwaite and Moore in 1796. Joseph Breck, in his book The Flower-Garden or Breck’s Book of Flowers (1851), wrote: “It is a suitable companion for the Phlox stolonifera, with its red flowers, P. subulata, with pink or white flowers; all which appear together the first of May.” zone4,zone5,zone6,zone7,zone8,zone9
