This classic Eastern North American fern has broadly blade-shaped fronds that taper suddenly at the tip and arise out of a central crown. The sori, or spore cases, are located on the margins of the leaflets, hence the common name. The Marginal Shield Fern was first introduced into Britain in 1772 under the Latin name Nephrodium marginale. Hardy ferns were being cultivated in America by the mid 19th century and horticultural books contained lengthy descriptions of cultural techniques. Ferns were often recommended for planting in rock-work. zone4,zone5,zone6,zone7
