This charming species has lush, dark green foliage, unlike the evergreen grass pinks with thick, blue-green leaves. It is native to northern Greece through the Balkans and Macedonia where it grows on rocky slopes and scree. The numerous, solitary flowers are about 2 inches across and are similar to the maiden pink (Dianthus deltoids) that naturalizes in grassy fields and meadows in North America. It was a useful plant for late 19th- and early 20th-century rock gardens and rockeries.
